My initial review of HVR2
Upon loading HVR1 I realised the pre sized baseboards were going
to be restrictive and immediately lost interest, HVR2 was keenly
anticipated to rid us of such restrictions.
First off printed instructions are included as a small booklet,
these are clear and to the point and much better than their online types
supplied by most games these days. On first loading the intro with sound
did not function smoothly on my P550 (all other min specs exceeded) but
could be skipped with the return key to get me going. A video tutorial is
provided but it only shows what can be done rather than how to do
it.
Once in the program I found the mouse was a little too fast and it
took a while to get used to, I first went to play with the baseboard size
and shape. Any baseboard size up to an acceptable 30'x30' can be made
and shaped around chimney breasts etc, sizes can be shown in imperial or
metric. Laying the track I found to be easy and mastered it in a few
minutes although an understanding of 1st, 2nd and 3rd radius is essential
as you would expect. Flexible track can also be laid with ease. There is
also provision to have gradients up to a second level making bi level
track systems possible. The usual Hornby accessories are included such as
bridges,buildings and trees etc.
One of the most impressive features is the new landscaping feature
enabling hills lakes and tunnels to be created easily (with a bit of
practice). I was easily (with care) able to create land (embankments)
under the raised trackbeds. I found it was best to complete the
laying of track before raising or lowering land.
I have not tried to operate the trains so I can't yet
coment on the operation side of the program which allows operation of up
to 8 trains at any one time. There are 6 pre set layouts for you to
operate if track laying is not your thing. Throughout the program you
are able to select 2D or 3D which is very useful. Once you have
designed your new layout there is a nifty shopping list facility. The
only dissapointing feature is the lack of rolling stock items to select
from, an editor to build your own would be useful, however Hornby say
further downloads will be available on their website.
Overall I am very pleased with the HVR2 program and have no
problem recommending it, especially for layout designers who use Hornby
track geometry.

BACHMANN, PECO TO
HORNBY CONVERSION TABLE
Bachmann Track uses the old Hornby Moulds and
therefore carries the same numbers and is also identical other than
country of manufacture. Cheaper packing (or no packing!) means Bachmann
track is slightly cheaper even though its still made in
Europe. Bachmann do not produce or recommend use of 1st radius
curves.
BELOW IS LISTED HORNBY TO PECO
TRACK EQUIVALENTS, WHILST THERE ARE MINOR DIFFERENCES IN MOST CASES THE
PECO WILL FIT WELL INTO HORNBY TRACKMATS/PLANS AND VICEVERSA, ALSO LISTED
ARE SCENIC ITEMS LIKE PLATFORMS WHICH ARE QUITE DIFFERENT BUT WITH LITTLE
OR NO MODIFICATION CAN BE USED WITH GOOD EFFECT- NOT ALL IN
STOCK.
